Chapter Six

Sen awoke from imposed slumber, his vison settled from a blizzard of chaos to focus on Lieutenant Zellmann sipping a black coffee, relaxing in his seat.

‘He’s awake,’ said Specialist Zeng.

Sen turned left yet his movement was constrained. Sen was strapped to his chair with electrical tape, arms, legs, waist and chest tapped to its frame, the doctor was outraged, ‘What have you done?’

‘You’re smart, work it out,’ stated Diana.

The fact he couldn’t see an armed Chinese soldier made the doctor nervous. His situation generated anxiety for he’d spent his life in control. Sen used and abused human beings … subjects as he referred to them. While his “subjects” were restrained, their minds kicked and screamed in terror, he the master, they slave, now the tables had turned.

‘What is the meaning of this Lieutenant?’

‘I don’t trust you Doctor Sen.’

‘Yet you trust that Chinese dog?’

Victor placed his cup on the table and gave a hard stare, ‘The question is do you trust me?’

Sen sneered, ‘Do not waste our time attempting to frighten me. You have a weakness Lieutenant, you possess a conscience.’

‘And I guess you’re gonna take advantage of my weakness in order to make it back alive?’

‘Why ask questions to which you know the answers?’

‘You sound pretty cocky for a guy strapped to a chair with no buddies and a click on the loose.’

‘But I control the beast and your survival necessitates I remain conscious my dear Lieutenant.’

‘I did fine just now, though I can’t say the same for your assistant.’

Colour drained from Sen’s face, ‘Nori?’

‘Was that her name?’

‘What have you done with Nori?’

‘I haven’t done a thing, the click sucked her dry.’

Sen’s face began to contort, Victor assumed it to be a nervous twitch.

‘I’m sorry,’ said Victor.

‘Sorry?’

‘Yes.’

‘Is that all you have to say?’

‘What do you want me to say?’

‘She was not just my assistant, she was my DAUGHTER!’

Sen thrashed struggling to escape his bonds, his efforts were fruitless. He tugged one way then another as a sailor in a storm. Sen let out a cry of pain, at the same time a roar could be heard from deep within Coatl’s bowels.

‘Doctor Sen, CALM DOWN!’

The Japanese scientist continued to wail, he shrieked so loud Victor got up and slapped his face.

After a few minutes of pouring his soul into life’s vessel of regret Sen’s excess energy had expired, he began to weep for his child.

‘Karma’s a bitch,’ snapped Diana.

‘SILENCE THAT CHINESE DOG!’ bellowed Sen.

‘You were okay with wasting your assistant an hour ago.’

‘A ploy to conceal my weakness, it was obvious the Lieutenant would never sanction her execution.’

‘At least she had a quick death.’

‘SHE WAS AN INNOCENT!’

‘SO WERE THOSE PEOPLE YOU MURDERED DURING THE WAR!’

‘They were nothing, THEY WERE SUB-HUMANS!’

‘Okay, give it rest you two. I don’t need another lecture on the Sino-war, what I need is a solution. We’re down one canark but we’re up one sleeper tube, Quetz, how does that put us?’

‘Use sleepers, I pilot alone, can do. Not air more than one.’

‘Okay, Doctor I want you to bring the click to us so we can put it down.
